Prevent Morning Sickness

Finding a way to prevent morning sickness is still a mystery to many pregnant women. No pregnancies are alike and therefore there really isn't a definitive way of preventing morning sickness. Although it is important to keep the morning sickness under control as vomiting heavily will dehydrate the mother and the baby.

It will also deprive the mother and the baby vital nutrients and vitamins if the mother cannot hold the food and water down. This usually would require hospital admission so that the mother can be given continuous fluids through a drip and the baby's vital signs can also be closely monitored. There are a few ways to help a pregnant woman prevent morning sickness.

Always take your time to get out of bed. For those who feel instantly ill as soon as they rise, then eat something light before you even get out of bed, like dry toast, a muesli bar or some fresh fruit juice. Leave them beside your bed so they can be reached easily first thing in the morning. Throughout the day, take frequent small meals, even if you don't feel like it. This will prevent an empty stomach which could magnify the morning sickness.

Stay away from caffeine laden drinks such as coffee or fizzy soft drinks as well as alcohol. Try to avoid heavy-duty housework, take things easy and have plenty of rest or short naps throughout the day or whenever you feel tired.

If you find certain food or the smell of certain food trigger the morning sickness, then avoid coming into contact with them. This is especially relevant when you are at a supermarket. Try not to brush your teeth too rigorously or brush them straight after a meal as this may induce vomiting. If you feel up to it, get some fresh air, take a short walk, do some gentle exercise to take your mind off any feeling of nausea.

Do always remember to take regular breaks during any kind of activity, listen closely to your body. Stop immediately if you feel light-headed or short of breath. The aim is to take your mind off the morning sickness by gentle activity but not to the extent of over-exerting yourself.

ake things slow and easy and move slowly. Do not twist your body suddenly or have jerky and sudden movements. Find whichever way that makes you comfortable in bed, if you need many fluffy pillows, do so. Never go to bed with a full or empty stomach, always remember to top up your food intake.

If possible, always keep your place well-aired so that you get fresh air throughout the day and night. If none of the above works and you keep vomiting at least four times a day with dramatic weight loss, then consult a doctor immediately. You must make sure to top up your fluid levels for your well-being and the baby's too.
