New research has indicated that for those expectant mothers who do not experience morning sickness are more than twice as likely to suffer a miscarriage than those who do. These researchers are convinced that far from having a negative impact on the baby due to the mother's constant throwing up and nausea leading to a lack of food intake as a result of the lack of appetite, morning sickness is believed to be an evolutionary defence mechanism that protects the mother and the child from very harmful living organisms found in food.
Taking proper nutrients during early stages of pregnancy is very important to ensure the foetus' healthy development. This is also the time (the first twelve weeks of gestation) where a baby is at its most vulnerable. This may help to explain why many pregnant women develop an aversion to foods that they used to love. They get put off easily by the simple day to day items such as the smell of coffee, meat, fish, cheeses and eggs. These are the types of food which harbour harmful micro-organisms and parasites during the food handling process.
Similarly, pregnant women are advised to always cook their egg thoroughly until the yolk is hard. They are advised against eating soft cheeses and to stay away from liver products.
Morning sickness is believed to be nature's way of shielding the mother and foetus from food-borne illnesses from harmful chemicals that have the potential to disrupt the normal development of foetal organs at the height of its development (e.g. the first trimester of gestation). This also explains why most women feel better after the first twelve weeks of pregnancy as this is the time when the building blocks of the development of the baby have been laid down, not completely out of the danger zone, but at least it is not as vulnerable as it was during the first trimester.
Morning sickness symptoms should gradually subside from this point forward. Although doctors are quick to reassure expectant mothers that not experiencing morning sickness does not mean their baby is in any kind of danger or that they will suffer a miscarriage. Research shows most women give birth to healthy babies despite experiencing little to no morning sickness symptoms.
In any case, it is universally agreed that pregnant women should avoid prescription drugs unless the morning sickness is so severe that not doing so would put the mother and the baby's health in great danger of a miscarriage.
